July 19, 2009 USAC-MTB MICHIGAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES #6:
Cannondale Midwest RacingSunny and 75 degrees provided the perfect settings for an exciting and fast race. Big M is located in the Huron-Manistee National Forest and provides a rustic ride through the ski trails of Big M. Many racers had made the trek from southeastern Michigan and camped around the trailhead so the area was buzzing with activity and offered the opportunity to be social with the other racers before we all went into battle.  The course was short, at about 6.1 miles, with smooth single track scattered with a few roots and sand, a perfect setting for a multi-lap race.  The trail was fast at the start through Lumberjack and then was deceiving as you climbed Double Bit for what seemed to be an endless hill, only to be treated with additional climbing through Catamount to the final thrill.  The course did provide a treacherous sand filled downhill close to the end with a sharp left turn at the top and a sharp right turn towards the bottom where only the brave would let it fly.  Most of us used this as an opportunity to exercise our technical skills to ensure we could accelerate to the finishing area and keep momentum for the next lap. After the race, the water cooler talk was all about how fast the track was, and many had stories of the “brave” ones that let it fly on the last hill to discover the sand always has the advantage over the bike.  Ginger Wissman, Oliver Wissman, Brian Leary, and Shawn Schaffert raced in Sunday’s event. CMR was well represented on the podium as Shawn (Sport Men 35 – 39) and Ginger (Sport Women 24-Un) took second place, Brian (Beginner Men 40-49) took third, and Oliver (Beginner Men 11-14) took fifth in each of their races. Overall, a great day of racing and podium success for CMR.  ~ B. Leary
